"Trust" was shot on location in New Jersey over the course of six days in May and June of 1996. Some of the specific locales included Sean O'Grady's Sports Bar in Somerville, and Kilmer Square in New Brunswick. Jim Talan, President of Product Crafters of North Brunswick and a friend of the production, kindly allowed his office to serve as the Detective's Office. And the scenes inside the detective's surveillance van were actually shot with the van parked in the director's garage in Hillsborough!
This last bit of trivia, besides pointing out the wonders of movie trickery, also serves to illustrate the tenacity required by low budget filmmakers. Just as the crew was ready to shoot that day, a tremendous thunderstorm rolled in and cut all power to the neighborhood. Luckily, DP Tom Agnello had a portable generator among his bag of tricks. Unfortunately, it was VERY LOUD! So the generator had to be stashed under the deck outside the back door, with a cable running into the garage. But hey, they got the shot.
The casting of "Trust" also turned out to be a very complicated affair. Having finagled the use of a vacant conference room at a well-known New York-based music video channel, the director placed an ad in a well-known New York-based theatrical publication. Hoping that at the very least maybe a dozen people would show up, he was surprised to find that literally hundreds of actors starting mobbing the lobby at 3 pm for a 7 pm audition! Gamely trying to turn lemons into lemonade (and with use of the conference room obviously being canceled) he and his associate producers organized the crowd into a efficient queue that would have made a well-known Florida-based amusement park proud! Although auditions were obviously out, the storyline and casting needs were explained to all, and in the end 300 headshots were collected. Another 300 followed in the mail. One very important lesson learned by the director was to never bother trying to work with large well-known conglomerates when you are just a small unknown non-conglomerate, unless you really enjoy getting unpleasant phone calls from lawyers and security people. "Trust" was edited the old-fashioned way, on a six-plate flatbed rented from MPE, in August and September of '96. The sound mix was finished in January of '97, with a releasable print and the transfer to video made ready in March. Special thanks here to Audio+Video International of Northvale, NJ who did a tremendous job on the video transfer, subtly improving both the sound and picture in the process.
All in all, the experience of making "Trust" was very enjoyable for the cast and crew, and we hope that watching it is just as much fun. |
